North Chatham in October
"As usual, for me, it took several years to take this photo. I had envisioned this particular catboat alone, reflected in still water with an interesting sky. Fortunately, the boat is kept moored late in the season after all the other powerboats have been hauled out. On this particular evening, all the elements fell in place. What I wasn’t expecting was the pink hue of the Belt of Venus to be projected into the clouds on the horizon. This atmospheric event happens occasionally and is difficult to predict, because it requires a clear sunset on the opposite horizon, as well as enough moisture in the air to cause the back scattering of red light. To enhance the foreground reflection of the boat and clouds, I positioned myself in about a foot of water on the tidal flats while standing on top of an upended scallop tote." -Jon Vaughan, Photographer
