"The Aquinnah Cliffs, formerly known as the Gay Head Cliffs, are a mile long and 150 feet high. I have photographed them many times, but I think this view best represents the remarkable variegation of colors in the ancient clay deposits. Preserved as a National Landmark, the 100 million year old striated sediments of the cliffs were forced to the surface by advancing glaciers about 12,000 years ago. Diminished by pounding waves and heavy rains that sometimes tint the surf red, the heavily eroded cliffs have been intricately carved into an elaborate natural sculpture of incredible beauty." -Jon Vaughan, Photographer
