First invented in France in 1827, a lithophane (Greek for “vision in stone”) is a porcelain engraving that comes alive when lit from behind. The image is created by light shining through the different thicknesses of the translucent, kiln fired porcelain; the thicker areas appear darker, and the thinner areas appear brighter. Light shining through the lamp’s panels has a lovely “sepia” tone, which highlights the beauty of the image. Made in California. (13 ¼” high)
